Network outage scheduled for Wednesday 9/17

There will be a campus-wide network outage on Wednesday, September 17, from 6:00am to 7:00am. During this time, there will be no internet access from on-campus.

The outage is required in preparation for a bandwidth upgrade to both the ResNet and Academic networks.

ResNet network "lag" issues addressed

Since the start of the semester, we've been experiencing network "lag" throughout ResNet. The root of the problem has been hard to identify because some sites would load fine and be very responsive -- others would take excessively long to load.

After much troubleshooting, Network Services has identified a possible remedy to the lag problem. So far, testing has been very positive and the problem appears to have been eliminated. However, we'll continue to monitor the situation.

WiFi installation complete in Golden Bear Village South

In July 2014, crews completed the installation of enterprise-grade WiFi in the Golden Bear Village South apartment complex. As a result, high-speed WiFi is now available in all residential areas on campus.

During the 2013-14 academic year, consumer-grade WiFi was installed in the Golden Bear Village South apartments as a "quick fix" to provide the convenience of WiFi to residents. However, consumer-grade WiFi has some shortcomings, such as extensive WiFi interference, in a high-density environment like an apartment complex.

The new enterprise-grade system resolves the interference problem and utilizes 802.11ac, the newest and fastest wireless standard available today.

Thursday, March 27th: WiFi outage in Johnson and UP

There will be a wifi outage in Johnson Hall and UP this morning in order to repair a faulty wireless controller. We hope to have wifi service in those buildings restored by 11am.

Wednesday, February 19th: Campus electrical outage

There will be a brief electrical outage on campus on Wednesday, February 19th, beginning at 10:00am. The outage is expected to last about 15 minutes.

The residence halls affected by the outage are:
  • Berks Hall
  • Lehigh Hall
  • Dixon Hall
All other residence halls are unaffected.

Friday, February 14th: ResNet closed

Due to weather conditions, the ResNet help desk and Johnson Hall computer lab will be closed on Friday 2/14.

Network outage scheduled for January 8th

There will be an hour-long network outage on Wednesday, January 8th, for a minor upgrade. This outage will only affect Dixon Hall and Golden Bear Village South.

The outage will take place sometime between 8:30am and noon.

Xbox One and ResNet Wireless

We made a slight modification to the network device classification policies in ForeScout, and Microsoft Xbox One users are now be able to connect to ResNet Wireless without a problem.
Another issue involved Xbox One users' inability to connect to Xbox Live. Microsoft changed the way this works, so some network changes needed to be made. These changes were put in place during winter break, and Xbox One users are now about to use Xbox Live and multiplayer mode.

Background: Previously, Xbox One users received the error "Can't get a Teredo IP address" when trying to connect to Xbox Live.

Cable TV lineup changes

Service Electric Cable has removed all analog channels, resulting in some changes to the campus channel lineup. Residents are advised to re-scan their TVs and QAM devices in order to pick up the full channel offering.

Students with older TVs that received only the analog channels should contact Service Electric directly to discuss options.

Telephone system repairs scheduled for Nov 6th

From the Manager of Network Technology:

The parts to replace the failing telephone equipment, which caused the telephone outage on Sunday, November 3 are on site and need to be replaced. The disruption of telephone service will be approximately 30 minutes while the equipment is being replaced starting at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, November 6, 2013.

The following telephone service will be functional during the maintenance window:

· All calls between on campus extensions will continue to work

· All calls from on campus extensions to off campus number will continue to work

· All calls from on campus extensions to a cell phone will continue to work

The following telephone service will be disrupted during the maintenance window:

· All calls from a cell phone to an on campus number, the caller will hear a busy signal and the call will not connect

· All calls from an off campus number to an on campus number, the caller will hear a busy signal and the call will not connect

Telephone outage update

From the Assistant Vice Provost for Information Technology:

This is to confirm that full university telephone service was restored about 1:15 am today.

Level 3, our campus telecommunications provider, performed the necessary temporary hardware replacement to restore telephone services at that time.

There is the probablity of a necessary permanent replacement to be scheduled briefly for early this evening, pending the shipment of parts.

Widespread internet outage: Update

The repair for our primary Internet circuit has been completed. We have performed tests on the primary circuit and have switched back over to our primary circuit as of 8:30 this morning.

Widespread internet outage

At approximately 8:50 am this morning, the university lost connectivity to the Internet. Our service provider has experienced a major outage and is currently working on resolving the problem. We have been switched over to our backup circuit at approximately 10:40 am. We have restored internet connectivity on this backup circuit with reduced capacity. You may experience slowness while we are on this backup circuit. We currently do not have an estimate time of repair and will post an update when full connectivity is restored on our primary circuit.

GBV South #60 network issues

We have been experiencing intermittent issues over the past several days with the network switches in Building #60. As a result, the switches have been replaced.
